Bad Habits That Can Harm Oral Health
Optimal oral health should be everyone’s ultimate goal. We only have one set of teeth in our lifetime, and we should do our best to ensure they last. Unfortunately, there are certain habits that can negatively impact your oral health. Thankfully, there are a number of dental treatments that can fix any problem with your teeth and mouth, but we would rather you care for your teeth properly. There are certain habits that can negatively affect your teeth and mouth. Even patients who have beautiful, clean teeth succumb to harmful dental habits from time to time.
These are a few of the habits you may not realize are affecting your teeth and oral health:
Clenching or Grinding
This is a common condition that affects many people, and most people are unaware they clench and grind their teeth until they are notified by a dentist. Recurrent clenching and grinding episodes can cause issues such as cracked teeth, headaches, and jaw discomfort, ultimately leading to issues related to TMD.
Using Teeth as Tools
When it is difficult to open a package or cut a tag, it can be tempting to use your teeth instead of looking for the proper tool. Unfortunately, using your teeth as a tool can lead to serious damage such as a cracked or broken tooth.
Brushing Too Hard
You may think you are helping your oral health by brushing your teeth; however, if you brush using vigorous strokes you may be doing a disservice to your oral health. Brushing too hard can cause damage to your tooth enamel. Make sure to use gentle motions when brushing. Using rough strokes is not needed to clean your teeth properly.
If you find yourself repeatedly doing one of the habits mentioned above it is time to break the pattern before you break or damage your teeth.
