Stress and the Effect on Your Oral Health

The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 was like something the world has not experienced for quite some time. Dentist and doctors offices closed, businesses and schools closed, family and friends were isolated from one another, and life as we knew it was changed. When dentist offices reopened, there were a number of patients who were experiencing dental issues such as worn enamel, fractured teeth, and jaw discomfort. Many of the symptoms that patients with no prior dental issues were experiencing could be linked to unusual levels of stress.

Signs of Stress

Now that the world is reopening and life is resuming a sense of normalcy, it is time to pinpoint the areas in your life that are causing stress or discomfort. During times of high stress, the body becomes tense, leading to patients grinding their teeth, biting their lip or cheek, and biting nails. These are all examples of actions that can lead to dental issues and emergencies. We also recommend monitoring your oral health and reaching out if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Teeth clenching

  • Frequent canker sores

  • Chipped, fractured, or broken teeth

  • Dry mouth

Don’t Forget Routine Appointments

One of the best ways to manage oral health is to visit the dentist every six months for a routine hygiene examination and cleaning. During these examinations, we are able to monitor and inspect for signs that stress may be affecting the teeth. The damaged areas can be repaired and modifications can be made to prevent any further damage. When routine exams are postponed or avoided and a patient is under extreme stress is when dental emergencies such as dental fractures occur. Dr. Michael Krochak and his team are passionate about patients receiving the care they need. If your anxieties are getting in the way of your oral health, be sure to speak with Dr. Krochak and his team. They are experts at overcoming dental anxieties and phobias.
