What are dental implants and are they all the same?
Dental implants are titanium cylinders placed in the jawbone where original teeth are missing. These root-like cylinders are used to secure the replacement teeth in the jawbone and are as close as possible to having your natural teeth.
When your natural teeth are missing, many problems can occur. The remaining teeth can shift or rotate causing an improper bite. Spaces and gaps may cause embarrassment, problems with speech or difficulty chewing. People who have dental implants report better ability to chew food and eat properly, renewed confidence while speaking and higher self-esteem.
Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, avoiding the need to alter or grind down adjacent teeth to anchor a permanent dental bridge. If multiple teeth are missing and sufficient bone exists, a permanent dental bridge can be built on multiple implants, again avoiding the involvement of the remaining natural teeth.
Dental implants are NOT all the same! At the NYC Smile Spa, we exclusively use a leading brand of implants. There are many cheaper, “knock off” brands of implants often advertised but these companies often go out of business and then there are NO parts available to service any problems that may develop and non-exacting manufacturing standards lead to a decreased success rate. In addition, if these implants can’t be restored properly (no parts to build up the post and crown portion of the tooth), the implant may need to be surgically removed from your jaw along with a significant amount of your surrounding jawbone.
At the NYC Smile Spa, we also perform BOTH the surgical placement of the implant as well as the prosthetic buildup of a new tooth on the implant. Having this knowledge allows us to better place the implant surgically in the proper position with regards to your surrounding teeth and bite relationship. This ensures a better end result in creating your new tooth or teeth. Quite often, patients are referred to a separate surgeon for the surgical placement only and then a different restorative dentist makes the new tooth. These surgeons haven’t made any crowns or restored teeth since they were in dental school so the disconnect between the two phases of an implant restoration can lead to inferior results, compromised longevity, maintenance or cosmetic issues.
Dental implants can also provide stability for complete or partial dentures, eliminating the uncomfortable moving and clicking often associated with dentures. Lastly, if your mouth is in serious disrepair and you want a complete full mouth restoration utilizing implants and stop the endless cycle of tooth by tooth repairs, Dr. Krochak is one of the few fully trained Hybridge™ full arch restoration dentists in the New York area. https://www.nycsmilespa.com/hybridge-dental-implants
