Your Oral Health Affects Your Medical Health
In the last two decades, there has been a tremendous amount of research showing how your oral health affects your medical health. If you don’t have regular dental cleanings and good daily home care habits you will develop periodontal disease in the surrounding gums and bone around your teeth. Many people think the bacteria present in this disease process is the culprit of medical conditions but in fact, it is not! in response to the bacteria your body produces hormones called inflammatory factors which then circulate throughout your bloodstream.
It is these inflammatory factors which cause other body reactions such as increased plaque accumulation in your blood vessels leading to higher incidences of cardiovascular disease and strokes. These factors also increase your risk of diabetes, GI diseases, cancers, low birth weight in pregnant women and even dementia.
Compromised eating from missing teeth or uncomfortable teeth lead to nutritional deficiencies that can then create or exacerbate a multitude of various medical conditions. Having an unhealthy or unsightly smile also leads to lack of confidence , fear of socializing and general psychological anxieties as well.
Your overall health starts with your mouth. Your lifespan can be severely compromised by poor oral health. So if you have not taken the best care of yourself dentally, I hope this inspires you.
