Covid 19 Patients with Gum Disease at Risk for Death!
A new study showed that Covid -19 patients with periodontal disease were 9 times more likely to die. The study also showed these patients to be 3.5 - 5 times more likely to need the ICU and be intubated. Previous links between periodontitis and lung diseases including asthma, pneumonia and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are well established.
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease and causes your body to release inflammatory hormones that circulate throughout your bloodstream and affect many diseases that are inflammatory in nature such as cardiovascular disorders, arthritis, GI issues, cancers as well as many others. Inflammation creates an environment in the lungs whereby the coronavirus reacts more violently. In addition, the oral bacteria in patients with periodontal disease can be inhaled and infect the lungs.
Periodontal disease is preventable and treatable. Regular professional dental cleanings and good oral hygiene homecare are critical to prevent periodontal disease. Many people are genetically susceptible to periodontal disease but with proper care it can be prevented. So if you haven’t seen your dentist in more than 6 months, it’s time to call for a checkup and cleaning!
